Depart London St. Pancras International and travel by Eurostar and ICE train, via Frankfurt Flughafen (Airport) to Erfurt. For one night at the InterCity Hotel in this most beautiful of historic towns.

We transfer by train to Dresden and after registering at our city centre hotel we travel by train to Radebeul for a return steam run on the 17 kms long, 750mm gauge Saxon narrow gauge Lössnitzgrundbahn line to Radeburg. This delightful steam line is still very much a public service and includes some street-side running before it reaches the true rural nature of the line. After a break to run-round its train at Radeburg we steam back to Radebeul and onwards by S-Bahn to Dresden.

Dresden is a beautifully reconstructed city and is home to many stunning architectural buildings, restaurants and cafes. The River Elbe which flows through the city is home to the largest paddle steamer fleet in the world, and you may also like to enjoy a beer at the brewery tap house adjacent to the landing stages.

We board our regional train to the Polish border for one of Saxony's finest 750 mm narrow gauge routes, from Zittau to the mountain spa resorts of Oybin and Jonsdorf, which is still very much a public service over the ten miles long route. This is a full day rover, including a light lunch at Oybin, so all steam lines will be covered, including the opportunity to photograph the parallel departure at Bertsdorf, and an engine shed tour at this junction station.

We transfer by private coach for a visit to the fabulous Dresden Steam Festival at Alstadt amidst the nostalgic atmosphere of a traditional working steam shed, with lots of locos in steam, footplate rides and visiting engines, including the opportunity to visit the reserve collection of the museum not normally open to the public. In the evening we return to Alstadt for the very atmospheric night steam photo parade with the remainder of the evening free to enjoy this truly wonderful city with its magnificent waterfront of historic buildings

DAY 5 - 6

It's two full days of steam out on the mainline from Dresden using locomotives from the festival. Whilst destinations have not yet been announced we have always previously been able to include the unique experience of parallel steam running over a considerable distance, and a thrash up the steep Tharandt incline with the two trains each taking turns overtaking the other - see our previous Dresden Steam Festival tour film on our website it's an amazing sight giving all participants the opportunity to see at close quarters powerful steam locomotives hard at work. Over the two days we are anticipating a total of four different runs two each morning and afternoon.

Travelling by train to Oschatz for an exclusive private steam photo charter on one of our personal favourite lines the 20 kms long Döllnitzbahn. Our private charter is scheduled for one of the beautiful Saxon-Mayer locomotives and we will also have a light snack lunch aboard the train.

B, L

Travelling by train into the scenic Ore mountains to Cranzahl where a day of steam awaits on the fabulous 17 km long, 750 mm gauge Fichtelbergbahn, climbing around 250 m through nine stations to the ski resort of Oberwiesenthal, the highest town in Germany. We include a tour of the loco workshops, including photographing a train crossing the 100 m long, 23 m high, lattice girder bridge at the entrance to Oberwiesenthal station before returning by steam to Cranzahl, and regional trains back to Dresden.

Travelling by train to Bad Schandau where we take the ferry across the River Elbe to Bad Schandau village. Here we have an enjoyable ride aboard a heritage tram of the Kirnitzschtalbahn. After crossing back the Elbe to Bad Schandau station for a train to Pirna. Here we board our steam boat for a cruise on the Elbe to Königstein. We then return by scheduled service train to Dresden.

DAY 10

A relaxing morning in Dresden includes a guided tour of the excellent Dresden Transport Museum before taking the S-Bahn service to Freital-Hainsberg for an afternoon of 750 mm gauge steam on the extended Weisseritztalbahn line meandering up the Weisseritz valley with an open coach to travel in if you wish. Now operating its full length of 26 kms through varying scenery, with 13 stations, and the steepest part of the line on the newly reopened section to the terminus at Kipsdorf. Known as one of Europe's great narrow gauge railways, this is a ride not to be missed. We then return by train to Dresden for an evening free to further explore this beautiful city

DAY 11

It's transfer time today as we continue our fabulous mega steam tour. Initially we travel by train from Dresden to Berlin aboard one of the traditional EC trains on the Prague to Berlin route that, at present, use relatively old rolling stock with a traditional dining car should you wish to make use of it. After registering at our hotel we make our way by S-Bahn and U Bahn to enjoy a guided tour of the Berlin Technik Museum. After our visit we travel by S-Bahn to enjoy a guided tour of the old steam depot and locomotive collection at Berlin-Schöneweide followed by a barbecue at the depot with the volunteers to conclude a most enjoyable day

DAY 12

A long day of standard gauge steam aboard an excursion using, hopefully, German Pacific 01-519 from Berlin to Hamburg and return a distance of over 350 miles of, hopefully, Pacific hauled steam. Once we have more information regarding timings we will make an itinerary suggestion for the dwell time in Hamburg.

DAY 13

A lovely final day today as we travel by train to Wittenberge to board a steam excursion to the historic hanseatic city of Wismar on the Baltic sea. Known for its well-preserved medieval buildings this beautiful harbour city is a delightful end to a wonderful tour.

DAY 14

Today it's homeward bound, as we speed our way from Wismar back to London St Pancras.
