Frequently Asked Questions
What is a heritage railway holiday?
A heritage railway holiday centres on travel aboard preserved or historic railways, typically operated by volunteers and running steam or early diesel locomotives. Rather than using heritage railways as a brief add-on to a wider trip, Railtrail builds entire itineraries around them. You might spend a week visiting six or seven different lines, staying close to the railways throughout, with an expert escort guiding the group at each location.
Which are the best steam railways in the UK for a holiday?
It depends on what you are looking for. The Isle of Man network is unique: a Victorian steam railway, a mountain rack railway, horse-drawn trams, and electric coastal trams all operating in one small island. The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway in Yorkshire is one of the most complete preserved lines in England, with a full working infrastructure from engine shed to signal boxes. The Strathspey Railway in Scotland runs through Highland scenery between Aviemore and Broomhill. Railtrail tours visit all three, along with many others.
Do I need to be a railway enthusiast to enjoy a heritage rail holiday?
Not at all. A good number of our guests come primarily for the scenery, the history, or the social side of an escorted group tour, and find the railways themselves a very pleasant bonus. The tours are designed to appeal to anyone who enjoys unhurried travel through beautiful landscapes with a sense of occasion. That said, if you are a keen enthusiast, the itineraries go well beyond the routes open to the general public, and your tour manager will know the technical detail to match.
What is included on a Railtrail heritage tour?
All tours include accommodation (typically three or four-star hotels), most meals, all rail journeys and entrance fees specified in the itinerary, and the services of a Railtrail tour manager throughout. Travel from your home to the joining point is not included, though the joining arrangements are clearly set out for each tour. A full breakdown of what is and is not included is available on each tour’s detail page.
How do I choose between a UK and a European heritage tour?
Both offer something the other cannot. UK heritage tours allow you to spend time on the railways that shaped British railway preservation: well-known lines with deep histories, often in areas of outstanding natural beauty. European tours give access to working steam railways that are genuinely rare, including narrow-gauge mountain lines and steam festivals where dozens of locomotives operate together. Many guests do both over successive years. If you are unsure, our team is happy to talk through which programme suits you best.
Step Back in Time with Heritage & Steam Train Holidays
Few travel experiences match the atmosphere of a heritage railway journey. The hiss of steam, the rhythm of the carriages, the smell of coal smoke as you pull away from a lovingly restored station: it is travel at its most evocative. Our heritage rail holidays have been bringing guests to Britain’s finest steam lines and Europe’s most celebrated historic railways for over 40 years, and the enthusiasm has never faded.
These tours are built around railways you cannot easily visit on your own. Railtrail guests travel the Isle of Man’s Victorian steam railway and its cliff-hugging electric tramway, ride the restored steam lines of the Harz Mountains in Germany, and experience the narrow-gauge railways of Wales that cling to mountainsides above the valleys. Many of our itineraries combine several heritage lines in a single holiday, so you cover more ground without the planning.
Every tour is fully escorted, with an experienced tour manager who knows the railways and the stories behind them. Accommodation, transfers, and excursions are all arranged, leaving you free to concentrate on the journey.
Railways We Visit
Our heritage programme spans some of the most famous preserved lines in Britain and Europe, alongside smaller, lesser-known railways that reward the curious traveller.
In the UK, tours regularly feature the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway in the Yorkshire Dales, the Strathspey Railway through the Scottish Highlands, the Isle of Man Steam Railway and Snaefell Mountain Railway, and the Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway near the Forth estuary. Our Chiltern Hills and Thames Valley Steam tour visits no fewer than ten heritage lines in a single six-day itinerary, taking in steam, narrow-gauge, and miniature railways across the south of England.
Across Europe, Railtrail guests attend the Dresden Steam Festival each spring, one of the largest gatherings of working steam locomotives on the continent. We also run tours to the Harz narrow-gauge network in Germany, the historic steam lines of the Netherlands, and the Fichtelbergbahn in Saxony.
These are not tick-box visits. Tours are paced to allow time at each railway: time to watch a locomotive take on water, to speak with the volunteers who keep these railways alive, and to travel on lines that many enthusiasts have wanted to ride for years.
