Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Classic rail holiday?
A Classic rail holiday combines reserved rail travel on scenic routes with hotel accommodation, most meals, planned excursions and a Tour Manager who accompanies the group throughout. The Classic format is fully inclusive of the elements detailed in each itinerary, so there is no need to arrange anything independently once you have booked.
What is included in an all-inclusive train holiday with Railtrail?
On a Classic tour, your holiday price includes all rail travel and seat reservations, hotel accommodation (typically three or four-star), most meals as specified in the itinerary, entrance fees and excursions listed in the programme, and the services of a Tour Manager from start to finish. Travel to the joining point is not included, and personal spending money is separate. A full breakdown of what is included is shown on each individual tour page.
What is the difference between Classic and Classic Plus tours?
Classic tours are Railtrail’s most popular format, covering a destination or region over four to eight days with a well-balanced itinerary. Classic Plus tours offer extended programmes with additional excursions and a slightly longer duration, suited to guests who want to explore a destination in greater depth. Both formats include the same level of Tour Manager support and the same inclusive approach to accommodation and meals.
What are the best rail journeys in the UK for a holiday?
Britain has some of the most scenic railway lines in the world. Regularly featured on Railtrail Classic tours are the West Highland Line through the Scottish Highlands, the Settle to Carlisle line across the Pennines, the scenic coastal routes of Cornwall and Devon, the Cambrian Coast line through mid-Wales, and the Isle of Man’s Victorian steam and electric railways. Rather than riding a single route, most Classic tours combine several lines across a week, giving a much broader experience of British rail travel than a single journey would allow.
Are Classic rail holidays suitable for solo travellers?
Yes. Solo travellers are genuinely welcome on all Classic tours, with single room options available on most departures. The small group format tends to suit independent travellers well: you have company when you want it and your own space when you do not. Many of our regular solo guests return year after year. If you have questions about solo travel or specific room availability, our team is happy to advise on 01538 382323.
Classic Rail Holidays Across the UK & Ireland
A Classic rail holiday with Railtrail is the most straightforward and popular way to experience Britain by train. Every tour includes reserved rail travel, carefully chosen hotel accommodation, the majority of meals, entrance fees and excursions as detailed in the itinerary, and the services of an experienced Tour Manager throughout. There is nothing to organise independently. You travel as a small, like-minded group with every detail arranged in advance, from your first departure to your final night’s stay.
This is not coach travel with a brief train ride included. Rail is the primary mode of transport on every Classic tour, chosen specifically for the scenic routes and the unhurried pace it offers. Whether you are crossing the Ribblehead Viaduct in the Yorkshire Dales, following the coast through Cornwall, steaming through the Scottish Highlands on the Jacobite or watching the landscape open up across the Isle of Man, the journey itself is as much the attraction as the destination.
Destinations on Our Classic UK & Ireland Tours
Our Classic UK and Ireland programme covers the length and breadth of Britain and beyond, with tours ranging from four-day short breaks to longer eight-day journeys. Destinations regularly featured include the Scottish Highlands, Cornwall, Yorkshire, the Lake District, Wales, the Isle of Man, Devon, and Ireland. Several tours focus on a single region in depth, while others combine two or three areas, travelling between them by rail.
Most tours are available as single or twin occupancy, and the small group format (typically under 30 guests) means the pace is relaxed and the experience personal. Many guests travel with us year after year, choosing a different region each time.
If you are looking for a short rail break rather than a full week away, several of our Classic tours depart on a Thursday or Friday and return within four or five days, making them well suited to those who want a special train journey without taking a full week’s holiday.
