Taking Germany’s 175th steam anniversary celebrations through into Summer we are delighted to offer a unique steam spectacular in picturesque Franconia in Northern Bavaria that will delight enthusiasts and partners alike.

With the chance to see around 100 steam locomotives in just a few days this really is a ‘time-warp’ tour that continues Germany’s incredible year of steam.
This tour also has much to offer as a summer break for non-enthusiast partners, with sightseeing in historic Nuremberg and classical Bavaria.

Day 1

If choosing to travel throughout by train, we depart London St Pancras International circ 13.00 hrs via Brussels and high speed ICE train to Frankfurt for one night’s B&B at the Leonardo Hotel adjacent to the station. We meet at the hotel clients who have chosen the flight option.

Day 2

We travel by regional train to Wächtersbach for a private steam photo charter on the 6.5 kms long 600 mm gauge line to Bad Orb, with numerous photo run-pasts and simulated departures etc. We return late afternoon by regional train to Frankfurt to collect luggage and continue by train to Nuremberg for 4 nights B&B at the Inter City Hotel adjacent to the station.

Day 3

A leisurely morning, where you have the choice of sightseeing in Nuremberg or joining our group tour of the official DB Railway Museum. The museum boasts everything from the oldest original German steam locomotive through to the latest ICE 3. In the afternoon this history comes to life as we take a steam excursion to Fürth with the 1935-built, working replica of the original 2-2-2 locomotive “Adler” of 1835. The original was Germany’s very first steam locomotive and was British built by railway pioneers George & Robert Stephenson to operate between Nuremberg and Fürth. This trip commemorates the 175th anniversary of railways in Germany, and we shall return to Nuremberg by the tube line U1 which runs very close to the original 1835 route.

Day 4

Today we travel aboard our mainline steam hauled excursion from Nuremberg to Neuenmarkt with 52 8195 to enjoy the superb attractions at the Railway Festival including over 30 steam locos scheduled to be on view at the old DB depot, with a number of guest locomotives arriving especially for the festival. Additional attractions include a ‘thrash’ up the steeply graded line to Markschorgast, plus lineside photo shoots, and all the fun of steam on the Feldbahn miniature railway.

Day 5

Travelling by scheduled DB regional train into the rural countryside of Bavaria to Nördlingen and the official Bavarian Railway Museum, situated in the old loco sheds where around 35 steam locomotives will be present. We then have a mainline, steam-hauled excursion along the ‘Romantic Road’ to Feuchtwangen and return to Nördlingen, before returning to Nuremberg by DB scheduled service.

Day 6

Departing Nuremberg at 10.00 hrs we return by high speed train via Frankfurt (for flight option clients) and Brussels, arriving London St Pancras International at 19.03 hrs
