Additionally, we enjoy heritage standard gauge steam, steam to the highest steam railway in Germany, numerous railway museums and collections, with a vintage steam tram tour for good measure.

  • Mainline steam Nuremberg to Meiningen

  • Full day mainline steam on the SauschwÓnzlebahn

  • Vintage steam tram charter

  • Steam to the mountain top at Oberwiesenthal on the Fichtelbergbahn

  • Visit the DB Railway Museum at Nuremberg

  • Superbly atmospheric locomotive collection at Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg Steam Shed

  • Visit the fabulous double roundhouse locomotive collection at Chemnitz steam shed

A wonderful late summer break of great German steam in a variety of gauges! Amazing steam-hauled railway journeys, great photo opportunities and the best Railway Works steam show in Europe!

From London by Eurostar to Brussels then via ICE trains to Stuttgart where we have a private coach transfer to our hotel and after registering, we have a welcome evening meal at the hotel.

After breakfast we have a private coach to travel to a day of steam on the famous Sauschwänzlebahn. This fabulous line is famed for its many twists and turns (hence the nickname 'Pigtail' railway) as it climbs through the hills over numerous bridges and through tunnels as we steam from Blumberg to Weizen. However, one of the beauties of this line is the super photographic opportunities so we use our private coach to lineside a train during the afternoon before returning by steam from Weizen to Blumberg. We will then be visiting the railway museum depot at Tuttlingen with a barbecue after the guided tour.

We travel with luggage by scheduled service train to Nuremberg and the Inter City Hotel adjacent to the station. We walk to the DB railway museum for a guided tour followed by a private vintage tram charter around the city. This evening we have an evening meal at our hotel.

For many today will be the tour highlight. An early start as we board our mainline steam special for the run from Nuremberg to Meiningen. Upon arrival we take the short walk to the railway works to enjoy the annual steam festival complete with locomotives in steam along with visiting locomotives and the opportunity to view locomotives and rolling stock in various stages of repair and construction. With ample time at the works and over 200 miles of mainline steam haulage it is a long but memorable day.

Departing Nuremberg with luggage by scheduled regional train to Neuenmarkt-Wisberg where after storing our luggage we have a guided tour of the German Railway Museum in the former DB Depot which gives a tremendous feeling of atmosphere and nostalgia whilst viewing the large collection of locomotives housed there. After a light lunch in the former staff canteen we collect our luggage and continue by train to Chemnitz. Here a private coach transfer takes us to the amazing former DB steam double roundhouse depot which now houses a super collection of both steam, diesel and electric locomotives. Outside much of the original railway yard and associated equipment survives. After our guided tour we re-board our coach and transfer to the Kongress Hotel, Chemnitz and an evening meal at a local restaurant.

A brilliant day to complete this great tour as we travel by local train to Cranzahl high in the mountains. The small station here is shared with the Fichtelbergbahn a wonderful steeply graded line climbing to the ski town of Oberweisenthal where we have a guided tour of the locomotive shed and time for another journey on the line before returning down by steam to Cranzahl and the regional train service back down to Chemnitz.

A private coach transfers us to the station for our return trains homeward via Leipzig, Frankfurt and Brussels then Eurostar to London.
